What is Restless Leg Syndrome ?

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move when at rest in an effort to relieve these feelings. RLS is unique in that lying down to relax activates the symptoms! At this time, it is believed that RLS affects at least 12 million, however that number if felt to be very conservative.

What does it feel like?

People often describe RLS as a burning, creeping, tugging, or like insects crawling inside the legs. The only way it gets better is to walk. It can be just plain ole uncomfortable, or it can be actually painful. Because the symptoms are worse when you are trying to sleep - you may actually get very little sleep. Of course, over time this results in exhaustion and day time fatigue.

How is it treated?

RLS is a life long condition. There are several medications that are currently being used, all with variable results. Individuals with RLS find various treatments work such as exercise, a change in sleep habits, smoking cessation, vitamins, nutritional supplements and medications. There is no one treatment that is right for everyone.
